Subcutaneous injection (DMPA-SC)
Description:
This new formulation of the existing DMPA contains the hormone progestin that thickens the mucus in the cervix, thereby preventing the sperm from reaching the egg. This prevents pregnancy. DMPA-SC is a reversible method of contraception that is given every three months as a subcutaneous injection (given under the skin). Women taking the DMPS-SC must visit their doctor every three months for their injection.
