What are Female Condoms?

The internal condom also called the ‘female condom’, is similar to the male condom and falls under the barrier method of contraception. It works in the same way as the external or ‘male’ condom, the only difference is that it is worn inside.

When we think of what a contraceptive is, we usually refer to a method or device that prevents pregnancy. However, barrier methods of contraception like male and female condoms not only prevent pregnancy but also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

The female condom is a soft, flexible, pre-lubricated sheath made from latex (natural rubber) or nitrile (synthetic alternative to natural rubber for people allergic to latex) and is inserted into the vagina or anus before sexual or anal intercourse. 

How Does a Female or Internal Condom Prevent a Pregnancy?

The female condom acts as a barrier, preventing the sperm from reaching the egg. The closed end of the female condom has a flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina or the anus. The open end remains outside the body and forms a barrier. Since the female condom prevents the exchange of bodily fluids, it reduces the risk of STIs.

Similar to its male counterpart, the female condom is versatile and suitable for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. It is an easily accessible and convenient option for LGBTQIA+ individuals. The design of the female condom makes it a practical option for anyone wishing to engage in sexual intercourse, including people with disabilities.

How to use a Female Condom?

You must use the female condom correctly to ensure maximum effectiveness.

How do you wear a female condom?

• Carefully remove the condom from the packaging. Avoid using your teeth to open the package, as it can tear the condom inside.

• The condom has two ends. The thicker end with a ring is placed inside the vagina and holds the condom in place. The thinner part of the condom remains outside the body and covers the vaginal opening.

• Find a comfortable position, such as sitting, standing with one leg elevated or lying down. Squeeze the inner ring and insert it into the vagina or anus. Push it as far as it goes. This step is similar to inserting a tampon.

• The thin outer ring must remain outside the vagina and cover it.

• During sexual intercourse, guide your partner’s penis into the condom opening. Make sure the penis does not slip between the condom and the vaginal walls.

How to remove a female condom?

• After sex, gently twist the outside of the condom and remove the condom from the vagina or anus.

• Be careful not to spill any semen.

• Tie a knot on the open end of the condom and throw it away in a dustbin. Do not flush it.

Remember: Never reuse a female condom.

How Effective is the Female Condom in Preventing a Pregnancy?

The female condom is 79% effective. This means out of 100 women, 21 may become pregnant despite using the female condom. However, when used correctly, the female condom is up to 95% effective. It may be a good idea to combine the female condom with other methods of contraception to increase effectiveness and further reduce the chances of pregnancy.
